VO benefits and assessment questions

A worthwhile project depends on a suitable load mix, an engineered operating range and a verified net outcome.

Benefits depend on the equipment and the design

The AER’s 2025 accompanying paper supports potential energy benefits from bringing elevated supply voltage closer to 230 V, while emphasising variation by location. That research concerns network voltage management; it does not establish a savings percentage for a customer-side VO installation. AER, pp. 4–5.

Lower electricity use

Suitable voltage-responsive loads may use less energy. Confirm the net result after equipment losses, with the same required production, comfort or service. A reduction in energy charges will not reduce fixed bill charges.

Better voltage consistency

A suitably designed regulating system can maintain a more consistent downstream voltage within its input and output limits. A fixed-ratio reduction follows changes in the incoming supply.

Less stress on some equipment

Reducing excessive voltage may benefit particular components. Evidence for quantifying appliance-life gains remains limited, so any asset-life claim should be specific to the equipment concerned.

Evidence for energy reporting

Verified electricity savings can support operating-cost and emissions reporting. Use the actual tariff and an appropriate emissions factor, and retain the measurement record.

Which loads may offer limited energy savings?

Many electronic loads maintain nearly constant power as voltage changes. Heating a fixed quantity of water can require essentially the same energy at a lower voltage, with a longer heating time. Modern equipment with electronic drives also needs individual assessment. UoW report, pp. 12–14 and 24–25.

The business case should identify the responsive part of the load and maintain equivalent useful output. A lower instantaneous watt reading alone is insufficient.

What if the site has solar, batteries or EV charging?

Include their electrical connection, controls and operating modes in the assessment. Any proposed improvement to solar export must be checked against inverter settings and network limits. Customer-side voltage reduction does not automatically release export capacity.

Assess the direction of power flow and equipment compatibility before selecting a system.

Must voltage exceed 253 V for optimisation to be relevant?

No. An efficiency opportunity can exist within the allowable supply range where compatible loads respond to a controlled reduction. Repeated readings above 253 V also warrant investigation of the incoming supply with the distributor.
Nominal voltage is a reference for assessment; it is not an automatic setpoint for every installation.
